Key points:

Ø The quad rider Alexandre Giroud was head and shoulders above the rest in the last two editions of the Dakar. The Frenchman, again a hot favourite, has a chance to write his name in golden letters in the history of the race.

Ø While the quad field has shrunk to ten vehicles in 2024, the calibre of the riders on the start list promises a no-holds-barred contest featuring challengers such as the Argentinian former winner Manuel Andújar and the 2023 W2RC champion, Laisvydas Kancius.

“I’m here to make it three in a row” – Alexandre Giroud is not beating around the bush. This is no idle threat, considering his track record in his first seven starts, with 11 special wins to his name since his debut in 2017 and, especially, his back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. In the last two editions, the man from Grenoble went from strength to strength while keeping a cool head in the face of his solid but gung ho rivals. All in all, he was the epitome of a Dakar champion. However, even for such an experienced rider, a hat-trick is a different kettle of fish. Only five competitors (across all categories) have ever managed to grab three titles in a row: Stéphane Peterhansel during his stint with Yamaha (1991 through 1993), Ari Vatanen (1989 through 1991) and Pierre Lartigue (1994 through 1996) in cars and, more recently, the Russian truckers Vladimir Chagin (2002 through 2004) and Eduard Nikolaev (2017 through 2019). Among the quad riders, the Patronelli Bros. were unable to pull it off even at the height of their dominance, while the Czech Josef Macháček, the fastest man before the official launch of the category in 2009, never achieved a three-peat either!

Giroud has taken over the mantle of top favourite, but he is still proceeding with caution, not least because an injured shoulder during the W2RC season meant he was not much of a factor on the international scene. He stormed to victory in the Rallye du Maroc, but his rival Laisvydas Kancius succeeded him on the honour roll of the world championship thanks to his superior consistency. The Lithuanian earned the bragging rights that come with the smallest Dakar race number (#170), but there will be other serious contenders eager to make their mark in Saudi Arabia. One of them is Manuel Andújar, who has twice failed to finish the Dakar since his triumph in the 2021 edition. The Argentinian showed that he is still hungry for more by winning the Desafío Ruta 40 on home soil and three stages of the Rallye du Maroc.

The start list is packed with dark horses and podium contenders, including the Brazilian stage hunter Marcelo Medeiros (fourth in 2018) and Francisco Moreno, who finished as the runner-up to Giroud last January. A question mark hangs over the potential of the three rookies: Samuel Desbuisson, who laid down a marker in the Rallye du Maroc (ninth), the Saudi Hani Al Noumesi, who will enjoy the home advantage after finishing third in this season’s FIM Baja World Cup, and the bold Antanas Kanopkinas, who is lining up on a Chinese-designed quad against all the Yamaha Raptors in the field.

Ø En las dos últimas ediciones del Dakar, el piloto de quads Alexandre Giroud mostró un claro dominio de su especialidad, además de mantener eficazmente a raya a sus rivales. Al francés, favorito para su propia sucesión, se le presenta tal vez la ocasión de ocupar un lugar destacado en los libros de historia de la prueba.

Ø Aunque la parrilla de quads se encuentra reducida a 10 vehículos en 2024, el alto nivel augura una confrontación intensa, con la presencia, por ejemplo, del antiguo ganador argentino Manuel Andújar o del ganador del título del W2RC 2023, Laisvydas Kancius.

“El objetivo será completar el triplete“, anuncia sin grandes sorpresas Alexandre Giroud. No parece descabellado, se trata incluso de una ambición bien legítima, si se tienen en cuenta los galones acumulados en sus primeras siete participaciones: 11 victorias de especial desde su aparición en 2017, sin olvidar los dos trofeos consecutivos como ganador de la prueba en 2022 y 2023. En las dos últimas ediciones, el piloto de Grenoble dejó patente su alto rendimiento, manteniendo en todo momento la sangre fría frente a contrincantes sólidos, que pecaron a veces de un exceso de prisa. Resumiendo, un uso perfecto del modo de empleo del aspirante al título ideal. Pese a su experiencia, que parecería ofrecer grandes garantías, el triplete será harina de otro costal. En la historia del Dakar, solo cinco pilotos lo han logrado, todas las categorías incluidas: Stéphane Peterhansel durante su época Yamaha (1991-92-93); Ari Vatanen (1989-90-91) y Pierre Lartigue (1994-95-96) en coches; y más recientemente los pilotos de camión rusos Vladimir Chagin (2002-03-04) y Eduard Nikolaev (2017-18-19). Entre los pilotos de quad, ninguno de los hermanos Patronelli lo conseguía en su momento de máximo apogeo, ni tampoco el checo Josef Macháček, el más rápido incluso antes de la creación oficial de la categoría en 2009, ¡pero jamás tres veces consecutivas!

Aunque luzca el traje de gran favorito, Giroud aborda el reto con prudencia. Además, en la escena internacional se tuvo que mostrar discreto durante la temporada de W2RC debido a una lesión en el hombro. Pese a imponerse en el Rallye du Maroc, su rival Laisvydas Kancius ha mostrado la mayor regularidad de todos y le sucede en el palmarés del campeonato del mundo. El lituano se ha ganado el privilegio de llevar el número más bajo del Dakar (#170), pero no es el único de los candidatos serios que podría progresar a gran velocidad en Arabia Saudí. No hay que olvidarse de Manuel Andújar, ganador del Dakar 2021, pese a haber abandonado dos veces consecutivas en las últimas ediciones. Además, se ha impuesto en el Desafío Ruta 40, en su Argentina natal, además de ganar tres etapas en el Rallye du Maroc, así que se le ve con ganas de ir a por todas.

Entre los inscritos en la categoría, resulta difícil excluir a nadie de las opciones al podio. El brasileño Marcelo Medeiros (4º en 2018) forma parte de los grandes coleccionistas de etapas de la prueba, al igual que Francisco Moreno (2º detrás de Giroud el año pasado), aunque en menor medida. Queda por ver en acción a los tres nuevos que completan la lista: Samuel Desbuisson, ya presente en el Rallye du Maroc (9º); el saudí Hani Al Noumesi, que tendrá la ventaja de jugar en casa, tras quedar tercero en la FIM Baja World Cup este año; y, por último, el audaz Antanas Kanopkinas, el único que se enfrenta con un quad de diseño chino al resto de la parrilla y sus Yamaha Raptor.
