A NEW TWIST IN ABU DHABI

Key points:

· 94 vehicles have been cleared to start the 32^nd edition of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, following the usual scrutineering at the Energy Business Center in Abu Dhabi. 29 FIA crews and 22 FIM riders registered for the W2RC will be taking part in the second round of the season.

· The car category will set up a rematch between the reigning world champion, Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing), and his runner-up, Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme). The Frenchman is just 2 points clear of the Qatari at the top of the standings.

· In the bike category, the overall leader, Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), and the reigning world champion, Sam Sunderland (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing), will be skipping the event due to injuries sustained this week, opening up the race in RallyGP.

· Tomorrow, the field will head to Al Dannah, which is making its debut in the stage and will host the prologue in the afternoon, as well as the first stage —of five— on Monday morning. Over 2,000 km, including almost 1,300 km of timed sections, stand between the competitors and the finish in the capital on 3 March.

FIA: A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME

Nine out of the top ten crews in the general standings put their names down for the ADDC. Mathieu Serradori (Century Racing) is the only one not present for the roll call. Sébastien Loeb and Nasser Al Attiyah, a three-time winner of the ADDC (2008, 2016 and 2021), sit in first and second place, ahead of Guerlain Chicherit (GCK Motorsport), who bagged the race in 2009. Martin Prokop (Orlen Benzima Team), fifth overall, also took the spoils in the 2018 ADDC. The Czech and his Ford Ranger came in second last year. Yazeed Al Rajhi (Overdrive Racing), third in the 2022 World Championship but now stuck in tenth place overall, needs a strong performance in the ADDC to move up to the top 5. But there is more to the race than the T1 category! Last year, “Chaleco” López and Cristina Gutiérrez drove their T3s into third and fourth overall. As it happens, Mattias Ekström is swapping his Audi for a T3 for the ADDC. The Swede, fourth in the ranking, will race at the wheel of one of South Racing‘s T3s in a bid to learn to read the dunes and, why not, to fight for the top spots. The rules award points to drivers and co-drivers whether their vehicles are T1s, T3s or T4s. This is a novel strategy for such a high-placed crew in the standings. The verdict will come in at the end of the ADDC next week. Still in the T3 race, “Chaleco” López‘s decision to stay at home with his newborn child, who came to this world shortly after the Dakar, means Cristina Gutiérrez (Red Bull Can-Am Factory) and her Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA teammates Austin Jones (who is topping the leader board), Seth Quintero and Mitch Guthrie Jr. will be the ones hogging the limelight. In the T4 category, the 18-year-old Dakar champion, Eryk Goczał, is taking a leaf out of the Chilean’s book, but for a reason of the mind, not of the heart. The young Pole has chosen to prioritise his studies. Rokas Baciuška (Red Bull Can-Am Factory), the reigning champion, now second overall, is in a prime position to regain the upper hand in the ranking, as the rest of the Goczał family has also decided to sit this one out.

FIM: K. BENAVIDES AND SUNDERLAND OUT

The Dakar champion, Kevin Benavides, broke his femur while training for the race on Wednesday. Sam Sunderland was also forced to pull out on Friday, when the three-timer ADDC winner (2017, 2019 and 2022), who was poised to return to the competition following his crash in the first stage of the Dakar, broke an ankle. The last-minute withdrawal of the Argentinian rider, who leads the overall, raises the stakes for the championship. No-one is better placed to exploit this opening than his teammate Toby Price, who also sits second overall. The Australian, who already clinched the 2016 ADDC, finished fourth here last year, but Price will be the only one flying the orange colours that dominate the constructor standings. Matthias Walkner, the 2021 ADDC champion, announced this week that his wrist still needs time to heal from the injuries sustained in the Dakar. This could play into the hands of Monster Energy Honda, the reigning world champion in the constructor category, with its Fantastic Four, who have done fairly well in the last few editions of the ADDC. Pablo Quintanilla, fourth overall and winner of the 2018 ADDC, was third last year, behind Ricky Brabec. Adrien Van Beveren, fifth overall, was the runner-up in his most recent participation, back in 2021. At Husqvarna Factory Racing, the odds have shortened for Skyler Howes (third in the Dakar), who discovered the ADDC last year, and Luciano Benavides (three stage wins in the Dakar), but they do not know the race as well as Hero MotoSports two riders, Ross Branch and Sebastian Bühler.

In the Rally2 race, the absence of the overall leader, Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing), seemed to open the door to Michael Docherty (SRG Motorsports) but, much like Walkner, the South African is still nursing an injury from the Dakar that will not allow him to take the start. Good news for Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing), who will not have to contend with his two fiercest rivals.

In the quad category, Abdulaziz Ahli is eyeing what would be his third triumph in a row on home turf, and he hopes to be as impressive as in 2022, when he hoovered up all the stage wins.

Puntos a recordar:

● Tras las verificaciones habituales en el Energy Business Center de Abu Dabi, 94 vehículos estarán en la salida de la 32ª edición del Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Entre ellos habrán 29 equipos de la FIA y 22 pilotos de la FIM compitiendo en el W2RC, por la segunda cita de la temporada.

● En coches, se espera un duelo en la cima entre el campeón del mundo, Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing), y su mayor adversario, Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme). El francés lidera actualmente la clasificación general por delante del qatarí por sólo 2 puntos.

● En motos, se han lesionado en los últimos días Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), líder de la clasificación general, y Sam Sunderland (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing), campeón del mundo 2022. Sus abandonos abren oportunidades en RallyGP.

● Los participantes llegarán mañana a Al Dannah, una nueva ciudad para la carrera, teatro del prólogo domingo por la tarde, y de la salida de la primera de las cinco etapas, el lunes por la mañana. Les esperan más de 2.000 km, de los cuales casi 1.300 serán cronometrados hasta la llegada en la capital del país, el 3 de marzo.

FIA: FAVORITOS FRENTE A DESAFIANTES

Nueve equipos del Top 10 de la clasificación general tomarán la salida del ADDC – sólo falta Mathieu Serradori (Century Racing). Sébastien Loeb y Nasser Al Attiyah, tres veces ganador del ADDC (2008, 2016 y 2021), ocupan los dos primeros puestos por delante de Guerlain Chicherit (GCK Motorsport), que ganó la carrera en 2009. Martin Prokop (Orlen Benzima Team), 5º en la clasificación general, también tuvo éxito en 2018 en el ADDC. El checo terminó 2º con su Ford Ranger el año pasado. Yazeed Al Rajhi (Overdrive Racing), 3º en el Campeonato del Mundo de 2022, es actualmente 10º en la clasificación general y cuenta con el ADDC para volver a estar cerca del Top 5. Pero es un poco precipitado fijarse sólo en los T1 a la hora de hacer predicciones: el año pasado, los dos T3 de “Chaleco” López y Cristina Guttierez obtuvieron la 3ª y 4ª posición de la carrera. Es precisamente por este tipo de vehículo por el que Mattias Ekström cambió su Audi en este ADDC. El sueco, 4º en la clasificación general, estará en la salida con un T3 de South Racing para leer las dunas con más facilidad, pero también para ir por un buen resultado. Según el reglamento, los pilotos y copilotos puntúan independientemente de si su vehículo es un T1, T3 o T4. Una estrategia que sigue siendo inaudita para un equipo tan bien situado en la clasificación general, y el ADDC dará su veredicto la próxima semana. Todavía en T3, en ausencia de “Chaleco” López que optó por quedarse con su hijo que nació justo después del Dakar, Cristina Guttierez (Red Bull Can-Am Factory) y sus compañeros del Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA Austin Jones, líder de la general, Seth Quintero y Mitch Guthrie Jr, son de los favoritos. En T4, Eryk Goczal, ganador del Dakar a los 18 años, tampoco estará presente. Pero para el joven prodigio, no es un tema de corazón sino de razón: el polaco da prioridad a sus estudios. Por eso, Rokas Baciuska (Red Bull Can-Am Factory), campeón de la categoría y actual segundo de la clasificación general, puede aquí creer aún más en sus posibilidades de ganar, desde que el resto de la familia Goczal también se ha quedado con Eryk

FIM: K. BENAVIDES Y SUNDERLAND AUSENTES

Kevin Benavides, ganador del Dakar, se rompió el fémur el pasado miércoles mientras se preparaba para la carrera. Sam Sunderland tuvo la misma mala suerte el viernes: el tres veces ganador del ADDC (2017, 2019, 2022), que debía reaparecer tras su caída en la primera etapa del Dakar, se rompió un tobillo. El abandono de última hora del argentino, líder de la clasificación general, relanza el campeonato. En primer lugar para su compañero de equipo y actual segundo de la clasificación Toby Price. El australiano ya tuvo una victoria en el ADDC en 2016 y terminó 4º aquí el año pasado. Pero Price estará solo para defender el color naranja de KTM, que domina la clasificación general de constructores. Matthias Walkner, vencedor del ADDC 2021, también anunció esta semana que su muñeca lesionada en el Dakar aún necesita reposo. Esto podría ser una buena noticia para Monster Energy Honda, el equipo campeón del mundo que puede contar con su cuarteto completo que triunfó en el ADDC en las últimas ediciones. Pablo Quintanilla, 4º en la general y ganador del ADDC en 2018, terminó 3º el año pasado por detrás de Ricky Brabec. Adrien Van Beveren, 5º en la general, terminó 2º aquí en su última participación en 2021. En Husqvarna Factory Racing, crecen las oportunidades de Skyler Howes (3º en el Dakar), que descubrió el ADDC el año pasado, y Luciano Benavides (3 victorias de etapa en el Dakar), pero su experiencia en la carrera es menor que la de sus rivales, como los dos pilotos Ross Branch y Sebastian Bühler inscritos con Hero MotoSports.

En Rally2, con la ausencia del líder de la general Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing), se esperaba una dominación de Michael Docherty (SRG Motorsports). Pero al igual que Walkner, el sudafricano estará de baja por una lesión sufrida en el Dakar. Una oportunidad para Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing), que competirá sin sus dos principales rivales.

En quads, Abdulaziz Ahli aspira a su tercera victoria consecutiva en casa y espera hacerlo de la mejor manera, ganando todas las etapas, como ya lo hizo en 2022.
