The fourth stage of the Dakar took place at altitude, with a profile that never dropped below 800 metres and sometimes climbed up to 1,300 metres. The cool weather accompanied the riders, drivers and crews on this 425 km long loop to the west of Ha’il. The previous day’s rain significantly changed the nature of the terrain, but not the beauty of the canyons and plateaux visited by the route of the day’s special. Tricky navigation in places was one of the challenges as were the dunes that made a plentiful appearance on the day’s programme. They were expertly managed by Joan Barreda, while Sébastien Loeb won by a whisker ahead of Stéphane Peterhansel in the car category.

Outlines

The hunt for stage victories is a speciality that requires, if not luck, then at least opportunism. The scenario throughout the day’s stage indeed seemed to point towards Mason Klein, who has been impressive since the beginning of this 45^th edition and lived up to his phenomenal potential during most of the day. Spending a long time as one of the openers, the kid performed the task like a battle-hardened pro, picking up the best intermediate times with authority and without complex. However, approximately fifty kilometres from the finishing line, the American was hindered by a fuel pump problem. This setback prevented Klein from picking up his second stage victory, but his tenth placed finish on the day was not detrimental to his still advantageous position in the general rankings: 6^th, but only 10’05’’ behind Daniel Sanders, who still leads the rally. The misfortune of some makes for the happiness of others and Joan “Bang Bang” Barreda, even with a broken big toe, grabbed the 29^th special of his career, as he lies in wait ready to pounce and obtain a place on the final podium for the very first time… But he still has to negotiate 10 stages. It is not often the case for the Spanish biker, but this year he is proving to be more consistent than Sébastien Loeb. The French driver has the talent to blow away any of his rivals in the car category. What he needed today were superhuman biceps to ensure his 17^th stage victory once his power-steering had given up the ghost during the last twenty kilometres. Due to this bad luck, the man from Alsace was only able to win by 13’’ in front of Stéphane Peterhansel, the unquestionable leader of the Audi clan, and two minutes ahead of general rankings leader Nasser Al Attiyah. However, at full speed and in a world without mechanical problems, does Loeb have the necessary resources and chutzpah to claw back 93 minutes over the remaining ten stages and almost 3,000 kilometres? This slightly crazy challenge is worth a try, while a more classic duel between the last two title holders, Al Attiyah (2022) and “Peter” (2021) is taking shape. While the recital in the quad race by Alexandre Giroud continues, with a third consecutive stage victory and a lead of more than 47 minutes over Francisco Moreno in the general rankings, the situation is much more eventful in the T3 category. After the problems encountered by “Chaleco” yesterday, it was Seth Quintero who lost a wheel and looks set to slide down the race hierarchy, while Mitch Guthrie and Guillaume de Mevius, the two quickest drivers on the first loop around Ha’il, are also engaged in a duel in the general rankings. In the T4 race, the youngest competitor on the Dakar, Eryk Goczał, picked up his second success on the rally by beating Gerard Farrés (see performance of the day), and now occupies 2^nd position in the general rankings, less than a quarter of an hour behind Brazilian Brésilien Rodrigo Luppi de Oliveira. The boy is very much in the reckoning. In the truck race, Martin Macík won a third special of the year, but did not disrupt the progress of his countryman Aleš Loprais at the top of the general rankings.

Crushing blow

There was little doubt about it, but Eryk Goczał was not satisfied with becoming the youngest stage winner in the history of the Dakar on stage 1. At the tender age of 18 years and 2 months, the Polish driver today obtained his second success and deservedly climbed to 2^nd place in the general rankings, less than a quarter of an hour behind the leader. Since their arrival on the Dakar in 2021, Marek et Michał Goczał, respectively the prodigy’s father and uncle, have not stopped repeating that when Eryk obtained his driving licence, the best member of the family would be the youngest, and they were not bluffing! This evening, his father has to face up to the misfortune that saw him collide in the dunes with South Racing’s Argentinean driver David Zille, relegating him to almost 37 minutes behind the leader of the category. With Michał trailing by half an hour, it is now on Eryk’s shoulders that the family’s honour rests, a family which gobbled up 8 stages out of 12 last year. For the moment and thanks to the young lad, the Goczał clan have taken 3 stages out of 5. The slightly crazy goal of all three of them climbing onto the final podium in Dammam remains alive.

Joaquim Rodrigues was taking part in his 7^th consecutive Dakar rally. We are obliged to use the past tense, because the Hero Motosports rider exited the Dakar prematurely with a fractured leg after 90 km of the day’s special, making it his third withdrawal since 2017. J-Rod was the hero of the Indian constructor, the man who ensured the brand their first victory on the Dakar on stage 3. This was not the only mishap for Hero, because Sebastian Bühler ran out of fuel before Ross Branch got bogged down with unending mechanical repairs. Only Franco Caimi managed to emerge unscathed, finishing 17^th, a little less than twenty minutes behind Joan Barreda. The Argentinean is 13^th in the general rankings, 48 minutes behind the race leader and the last chance for the team to shine in the overall race hierarchy.

World Rally-Raid Championship

Even if he is behind in the general rankings since suffering brake problems on stage 2, Martin Macík is displaying his fine level of performance on the 45^th edition of the Dakar, and won his fourth stage of the year today, in addition to the three successes previously acquired during his first eight participations as a driver. The Czech nation is in rude health in the category, confirmed by the display of Aleš Loprais, who is dominating the general rankings and also has a stage win in the bag, from stage 2. In total, Czech drivers have won 35 stages in the history of the Dakar. The biggest share of this score will remain for some time with Karel Loprais, who boasts a little less than half of this amount alone (16), as well as six titles on his roll of honour.

Like last year, GasGas can only count on one of its riders alone to win the first leg in 2023. This year, it is Daniel Sanders and, despite a day when he was less consistent than the others, he still leads the general rankings. In the Rally 2 class, the race to succeed Mason Klein seems to be a duel between his runner-up last year Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Husqvarna Racing) and Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing) since Bradley Cox exited the rally early due to injury. The Italian triumphed today, but the Frenchman remains in charge of the general rankings ahead of the Italian. In the quad race, the arrival this season of Manuel Andújar, who won the Dakar in 2021, is sowing seeds of doubt in the protagonists of season 1, namely Laisvydas Kancius and Pablo Copetti. The Argentinean currently leads the W2RC rankings. In the car category, following Guerlain Chicherit’s victory yesterday, it was the turn of Sébastien Loeb to bounce back. While his success is no form of consolation for time missed out in the lead on the Dakar, it will perhaps offer him the possibility of 5 points in Dammam, which could make the difference. Peterhansel and Sainz, both on the day’s podium, are also gleaning points for stage wins that could be a game-changer when it comes to the crunch. In the T3 category, the five crews of the Red Bull dream team are taking over, as they occupy the first five places in the general rankings. In the T4 race, world number one Rokas Baciuška is for the moment under threat but remains on the provisional podium, behind Rodriguo Luppi de Oliveira and Eryk Goczał. In the truck category, Martin Macík launched his comeback. The Czech driver regained twelve minutes on his direct rival in the championship Janus Van Kasteren who only leads by 26 minutes. There are still 30 days of racing in the 2023 championship, so it is all to play for!

Juan Morera and Lidia Ruba should not regret giving up their Fiat Panda from last year and switching to a Toyota HDJ80 for their second participation in the Dakar Classic. The Spaniards remain in the lead ahead of three Belgian crews, also equipped with Japanese 4x4s in H3, for vehicles with the highest average. Tomorrow morning, the competitors in the lesser H0 and H1 categories, in often less recent and therefore lower performing vehicles, will tackle two faster regularity tests in which they will have a better chance of expressing themselves. In the afternoon, they will return to the bivouac to take a breather and restore their vehicles to health if they so wish, while the H2 and H3 vehicles will have to deal with two 40 km “dune tests”, which will be the biggest portion that awaits them between now and Dammam. Two programmes at opposite ends of the spectrum!

Stéphane Peterhansel: “It’s like fighting for four hours”

“Today it was the first day without technical problems, without punctures and also no dust or cars to overtake with the dust. It was perfect conditions. There were a lot of dunes and camel grass. If we wanted to get a good time we had to push and take a lot of impacts on the car as well as the body, so you need to be ready for that. We know this, but it’s always a surprise just how hard it is inside the car. So, it’s like fighting for four hours or something like that. But we did it and I think it’s a good result”.

La altitud ha hecho de las suyas en una cuarta etapa del Dakar cuyo perfil no ha bajado en ningún momento de los 800 metros y ha llegado a subir hasta los 1300. El frío ha acompañado a los pilotos en este gran lazo cerrado de 425 km dibujado al oeste de Ha’il. Las precipitaciones de la víspera han modificado el terreno de forma considerable, pero no han podido con la belleza de los cañones y las mesetas que atravesaba la especial. La navegación por lugares complicados formaba parte del reto, así como las abundantes dunas a lo largo y ancho del recorrido. Joan Barreda ha comprendido el trazado a la perfección, mientras que Sébastien Loeb se ha impuesto in extremis a Stéphane Peterhansel en la categoría de autos.

Lo esencial

La caza y captura de especiales es un deporte selecto que, aparte de suerte, exige contar con el don de la oportunidad. El escenario de la etapa del día fue bastante propicio para un Mason Klein impresionante desde el inicio de esta 45ª edición y absolutamente a la altura de las fantásticas expectativas creadas durante la mayor parte de la jornada. Ha abierto pista durante mucho tiempo como un veterano curtido y ha rubricado los mejores cronos intermedios con autoridad, cero dudas y cero complejos. Ahora bien, a cincuenta kilómetros de la meta, el estadounidense se ha visto obligado a ralentizar la marcha por un culpa de un problema con la bomba de combustible. Ese contratiempo ha impedido que Klein se adjudicase su segunda etapa, pero su 10ª posición en la especial de hoy no echa por tierra su situación ventajosa en la general: es 6º a tan solo 10’05’’ de Daniel Sanders, el líder perenne de la general. Infortunio para unos y suerte para Barreda, quien con un dedo roto en el pie se ha adjudicado la 29ª especial de su carrera y se mantiene al acecho para subirse por primera vez al podio final. Le quedan diez intentos para confirmarlo. No es lo habitual para el piloto castellonense, pero este año está siendo más constante que Sébastien Loeb. El piloto francés tiene talento de sobra para imponerse a cualquiera de sus rivales en la categoría de autos. Hoy le habrían venido muy bien unos bíceps descomunales para obtener su 17ª victoria de etapa con más facilidad, puesto que la dirección asistida le ha fallado en los últimos veinte kilómetros. Por ese azar del destino, el piloto alsaciano solo ha podido rascarle 13’’ a Stéphane Peterhansel, líder intratable de los Audi, y dos minutos escasos a Nasser Al Attiyah, líder de la general. La pregunta es: a toda velocidad y sin contratiempos mecánicos, ¿tiene Loeb los medios y la locura necesaria para recortar un retraso de 93 minutos en 10 etapas y unos 3000 kilómetros restantes de recorrido? Como desafío un poco loco, merece intentarse, si bien se perfila ya un duelo más clásico entre dos campeones recientes: Al Attiyah (2022) y «Peter» (2021). Alexandre Giroud sigue dando un recital con una tercera victoria de etapa consecutiva y una ventaja de 47 minutos sobre Francisco Moreno en la general, pero en los T3 la situación es más caótica. Tras las vicisitudes de «Chaleco» en la etapa de ayer, hoy ha sido Seth Quintero quien ha destrozado una rueda y está a punto de descolgarse en la clasificación, mientras que Mitch Guthrie y Guillaume de Mevius, los dos más rápidos en la primera vuelta alrededor de Ha’il, se enfrentan también en la general. En T4, el benjamín dakariano Eryk Goczał se adjudica ya su segundo entorchado al imponerse a Gerard Farrés (véase la sección «La actuación del día») y se coloca 2º en la general a menos de un cuarto de hora del brasileño Rodrigo Luppi de Oliveira. El muchacho se mueve entre los grandes como pez en el agua. En camiones, Martin Macík se hace con su cuarta especial del año sin poner en peligro la progresión controlada de su compatriota Aleš Loprais en lo más alto de la clasificación general.

La actuación del día

Un duro revés

Se veía venir que Eryk Goczał no se contentaría con acabar la primera especial con la etiqueta de vencedor de etapa más joven de la historia del Dakar. A sus 18 años y 2 meses, el polaco obtiene hoy su segunda victoria y escala sin miramientos hasta el 2º puesto de la general a menos de un cuarto de hora del líder. Desde su llegada al Dakar en 2021, Marek y Michał Goczał, padre y tío respectivamente del chico prodigio, no han dejado de repetirlo: cuando Eryk se saque el permiso de conducir, el mejor de los Goczał será el más joven. Y al parecer no era solo un deseo bienintencionado. Esta noche, su padre tendrá motivos para consolarse tras su colisión inverosímil en las dunas con el argentino David Zille del equipo South Racing que lo relega a más de 37 minutos de la cabeza de carrera. Con media hora de retraso para Michał, le toca el turno a Eryk de defender el honor de una familia que el año pasado ganó 8 de las 12 etapas disputadas. De momento, y gracias al benjamín, los Goczał se han anotado 3 victorias en 5 etapas. El objetivo algo loco de subirse los tres al podio de Dammam sigue siendo una posibilidad.

Joaquim Rodrigues participaba en su séptimo Dakar consecutivo. Usamos el pretérito imperfecto porque el piloto de Hero Motosports ha abandonado el Dakar tras romperse la pierna en el kilómetro 90 de la especial. Es su tercer abandono desde 2017. J-Rod era el héroe de la marca india, el piloto que obtuvo el año pasado la primera victoria para el equipo en el Dakar en la 3ª etapa. Además, la mala fortuna se ha cebado con Hero, puesto que Sebastian Bühler ha tenido un problema con el combustible justo antes de que Ross Branch se viera obligado a poner a prueba sus dotes para la mecánica durante unos minutos interminables. Franco Caimi es el único que ha esquivado los dardos para quedar 17º a algo menos de 20 minutos de Barreda. El argentino es 13º en la general a 48 minutos de la cabeza de carrera y encarna ahora la última oportunidad del equipo de brillar en la general.

World Rally-Raid Championship

Pese a haber quedado rezagado en la clasificación general tras sus problemas con los frenos en la 2ª etapa, Martin Macík está demostrando su buen nivel en esta 45º edición y se embolsa hoy su cuarta especial del año, la cual viene a sumarse a sus tres victorias anteriores en sus ocho primeras participaciones como piloto. La buena salud de la nación checa en la categoría se confirma gracias a las actuaciones de un gran Aleš Loprais que domina la general y ya se ha adjudicado también una especial, precisamente en la 2ª etapa. En total, los pilotos checos se han adjudicado 35 etapas en toda la historia del Dakar, y el plusmarquista sigue siendo Karel Loprais desde hace ya tiempo al conseguir él solo casi la mitad de esas victorias (16) y, sobre todo, los seis títulos que adornan su palmarés.

Al igual que el año pasado, GasGas solamente podrá contar con la victoria de uno de sus pilotos en la primera manga de 2023. Este año le toca a Sanders y, a pesar de haber tenido menos consistencia hoy que los demás, sigue en cabeza de la general. En Rally2, cabe esperar que la sucesión abierta de Mason Klein se dirima entre su subcampeón Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Husqvarna Racing) y Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing) tras el abandono por lesión de Bradley Cox. El italiano se ha impuesto hoy, pero el francés se mantiene por delante en la general. En quads, la llegada este año de Manuel Andújar, vencedor del Dakar en 2021, supone un problema para los sospechosos habituales de la primera temporada, Laisvydas Kancius y Pablo Copetti. El argentino lidera en estos momentos la clasificación W2RC. En autos, tras la victoria de Chicherit en la etapa de ayer, ahora le toca a Loeb escalar puestos. Su victoria apenas compensa en cuanto al crono para liderar el Dakar, pero le servirá para obtener 5 puntos en Dammam que podrían marcar la diferencia. Peterhansel y Sainz, ambos en el podio de hoy, rascan también algún punto que podría mover la balanza en un sentido u otro cuando llegue el momento. En T3, el relevo lo han tomado cinco tripulaciones del dream team de Red Bull que ocupan los cinco primeros puestos de la general. En T4, el número uno mundial Rokas Baciuška tiene algo de competencia, pero se aferra al podio provisional por detrás de Rodrigo Luppi de Oliveira y Eryk Goczał. En camiones, Martin Macík busca la remontada. El checo le ha recuperado 12 minutos a su rival más directo en el campeonato, un Janus van Kasteren al que solo le quedan 26 minutos de ventaja. Faltan por disputarse 30 días de carrera en el campeonato de 2023 y aún no hay nada decidido.

Con sabor a Classic

Juan Morera y Lidia Ruba casi seguro que no se arrepienten de haber cambiado su Fiat Panda del año pasado por un Toyota HDJ80 para su segunda participación en el Dakar Classic. El matrimonio español mantiene el liderato de la general frente a tres tripulaciones belgas que también confían en los 4×4 de la marca japonesa en H3, la categoría superior. Mañana por la mañana, los participantes de las categorías más bajas, de la H0 a la H1, compuestas por vehículos más antiguos con menos rendimiento, se enfrentarán a dos pruebas de regularidad más rápidas en las que podrán dar buena muestra de lo que son capaces de hacer. Por la tarde volverán al vivac para darse un respiro y poner a punto sus vehículos si así lo desean, mientras que los H2 y H3 tendrán que superar dos pruebas de dunas de 40 kilómetros, la mayor distancia arenosa que les espera de aquí a Dammam. Más disparidad, imposible.

Stéphane Peterhansel: «Es como un combate de boxeo»

«Es la primera especial en la que no hemos tenido pinchazos y hemos podido marcar nuestro ritmo desde el principio, pero para hacer un buen tiempo hay que sufrir, es casi como un combate de boxeo: saltas sobre la hierba de camello, te golpeas con las dunas y, si no haces eso, no haces buen tiempo. Para el cuerpo, la intensidad es intermedia. Llevamos buena suspensión, pero tampoco podemos hacer milagros y recibimos muchos impactos. ¿Podremos recuperar lo que perdimos los dos primeros días? Esa es la pregunta que nos hacemos».
