A FRESH START FOR THE TRUCK RACE

Key points:

Ø 56 crews will be vying to take the vacant throne in the truck category. As the start of the event on 31 December draws closer, the absence of the reigning champion from the Saudi desert has blown the race wide open.

Ø The Netherlands and the Czech Republic have already waved their flags from the top of the podium in the 21^st century. The Dutch will be represented by challengers such as Janus van Kasteren and W2RC champion Kees Koolen, while the Czechs will be banking on Martin Macík and Aleš Loprais to get back to their winning ways.

A quick glance at the list of winners shows the extent of the Russian hegemony. Not even a year ago, the Russians were filling up the top 4 in the general standings. However, as the conditions for admission to the Dakar are aligned with the international rules concerning Russian athletes, many competitors who had got used to fighting for the scraps are now seen as favourites. The title is now up for grabs, with the Dutch and Czech clans in the pole position.

Indeed, the fifth and sixth position overall in the 2022 Dakar went to two Dutchmen now promoted to favourite status. Janus van Kasteren’s meteoric rise (sixth in 2021 and fifth in 2022) has drawn a lot of interest and inspired the Team De Rooy leader to set his sights on a podium spot, but the grizzled veteran Martin van den Brink also fancies a shot at the title, as does his young son Mitchel. However, the best bet for the world capital of truck racing is Kees Koolen, who continued to hone his driving skills throughout his victorious W2RC campaign. Koolen, one of the few competitors who have finished the Dakar in every single category, will be taking the start with number 500, marking him as the man to watch. The Netherlands can also count on Richard de Groot, Pascal de Baar and Ben van de Laar as dark horses for the podium.

The depth of the Czech delegation is also impressive. Martin Macík, who has finished in the top 7 in four of the five last editions (fourth in 2021), appears to have the clearest path to victory. His youthful appearance can no longer hide his prowess or his ambition, which burns brighter than ever with the development of a brand-new Iveco in his garages. Fellow Czech Aleš Loprais, third in the last Dakar held in Africa (2007), is also gunning for victory. The nephew of six-time winner Karel Loprais, who passed away shortly before the start of the 2022 edition, remains as spry as ever (fifth in 2019 and 2021) and is a legitimate contender for glory in Dammam at the wheel of his Praga truck. Back in the Czech Republic, Team Buggyra Racing fans are adamant that Martin Šoltys (tenth in 2021) and Jaroslav Valtr (eighth in 2016) are in with a shout. So many candidates and so few podium spots…

CAMIONES: NUEVO REPARTO DE CARTAS

Ø En esta edición, serán 56 los camiones que se disputarán el título de la categoría. Al estar ausente el vigente campeón, el próximo 31 de diciembre arrancará una carrera en el desierto saudí en la que todo es posible.

Ø En el siglo XXI, los Países Bajos y la República Checa ya tuvieron ocasión de plantar su bandera en la cima de la prueba. Los Países Bajos se presentan con Janus van Kasteren, ganador del W2RC, como uno de sus representantes; y la República Checa, con Martin Macik y Aleš Loprais como bazas principales para hacerse de nuevo con la victoria.

Basta echarle un vistazo rápido al palmarés para recordar que la categoría camiones se ha visto claramente dominada por pilotos rusos desde hace algún tiempo; sirva de ejemplo los cuatro primeros puestos de la general final el pasado mes de enero. Puesto que las condiciones de admisión al Dakar deben someterse a los reglamentos internacionales sobre los deportivos rusos, los camiones acostumbrados a aspirar solo a algún puesto de honor se convierten ahora en favoritos. En este contexto, asistimos a un nuevo reparto de cartas en la pugna por el título, en la que pueden participar un gran número de equipos, principalmente repartidos entre el clan neerlandés y la escuela checa.

Al término de la edición de 2022, dos neerlandeses se alzaban como quintos y sextos, por lo que figuran ahora como favoritos. Uno de ellos es Janus van Kasteren, cuya rápida ascensión no ha pasado desapercibida: sexto en 2021 y quinto en 2022, el jefe de filas del equipo Team De Rooy aspirará al podio, aunque Martin Van den Brink también sabe que se le presenta una oportunidad de oro para destacar en lo más alto, al igual que a su joven hijo Mitchel. Sin embargo, el líder del país del camión podría ser Kees Koolen, cuya conducción se ha ido perfeccionando a lo largo de la temporada de W2RC, en la que ha terminado a la cabeza. Uno de los pocos pilotos de la historia del Dakar que ha completado la prueba en todas las categorías tomará la salida con el número 500, que le señala como competidor al que seguir de cerca. La delegación de los Países Bajos también puede contar con Richard de Groot, Pascal de Baar o Ben Van de Laar que podrían dar la sorpresa y subir al podio.

En el clan checo la concentración de talento es igual de impresionante. A primera vista, el aspirante más convincente sería Martin Macik, clasificado en cuatro ocasiones entre los siete primeros en las últimas cinco ediciones (cuarto en 2021). Por su aire joven, su eficacia y ambiciones parecían pasar algo desapercibidas. Sin embargo, sus metas son ahora más elevadas que nunca con su nuevo camión Iveco, desarrollado en sus talleres. La victoria es el objetivo que se ha marcado su compatriota Aleš Loprais, tercero en el último Dakar africano (2007). El sobrino del seis veces campeón Karel Loprais, fallecido pocos días antes de la edición 2022, presenta también un expediente honorable en los últimos años (quinto en 2019 y 2021), razones más que suficientes para creer en una victoria en Damman al volante de su camión Praga. Por su parte, en la República Checa los partidarios de Buggyra Racing creen fervientemente en las opciones de los Tatra de Martin Soltys (10º en 2021) y de Jaroslav Valtr (8º en 2016). Pero, al final, no habrá sitio para todos en el podio.
