Round 4: THE SEASON CLOSER

Key points:

Ø Today and tomorrow: administrative and technical scrutineering for the last round of the W2RC. 21 FIM motorcycle / quad riders and 20 FIA crews are expected.

Ø Tomorrow afternoon, the event will start with the qualifying stage. This will be followed by four days of racing to wrap up the season.

Ø For this first season of W2RC, 5 FIM and FIA World Rally-Raid Champion titles are at stake, 8 FIA Rally-Raid Champion titles, 3 FIM Rally-Raid World Cup titles as well as 4 FIM Rally-Raid Trophy titles.

The challengers

Among the professional RallyGP competitors, the FIM is expecting 11 riders to pass through scrutineering. Four are missing: Matthias Walkner (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), the reigning World Champion who was absent from Round 3, is still recovering from injury. His teammate Toby Price, who crashed on the Rallye du Maroc, will not be at the start of the final race either. Daniel Sanders (GasGas Factory Racing) is in the same position as Walkner since his crash on the Dakar. Pablo Quintanilla, currently second in the overall standings, is also out at the last minute. The Monster Energy Honda rider injured his shoulder during the Rallye du Maroc, which he finished with gritted teeth. In Rally2, there are 7 entries, including Mason Klein (BAS World KTM Racing), the 20-year-old American who has already won the Rally2 World Cup and the Rally2 Junior Trophy on round 3. In the quads, three riders are expected. The leader in the overall standings and winner of the Dakar, Alexandre Giroud (Yamaha SMX Drag’on), Jurav Varga (Varga Motorsport Team) 2nd in the overall standings and Kamil Wisnieswski (Orlen Team) 5th in the provisional standings.

The FIA have 7 cars entered in the final, with three drivers mathematically still in the title fight: Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) with 144 points, Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme) with 122 points and Al Rajhi (Toyota Overdrive) with 100 points. With 8 lightweight prototypes in T3, the situation is identical. Lopez (Can-Am Factory South Racing) with 182 points, Gutierrez (Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team) with 154 points and his teammate Quintero with 144 points are all still in the race. And it’s a similar story in T4, the closest fought category by far: Marek Goczal (Cobant-Energylandia) with 152 points, Baciuska (South Racing Can-Am) with 151 points and Jones (Can-Am Factory South Racing) with 150 points are all in the hunt.

The titles at stake

Next Sunday, the FIM will award two World Championship titles. Firstly, the rider’s title, for which Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing) is currently the best placed with 74 points against 50 points for his closest rival, Brabec (Monster Energy Honda), now that Quintanilla is not taking the start. The second is the manufacturer’s title, where HRC enjoys a comfortable lead. The ‘reds’ have accumulated 112 points against 74 points for GasGas and 70 points for KTM. The latter two brands will only line up one representative each and are therefore threatened by the return of Husqvarna. With 67 points and the two fastest riders on the Rallye du Maroc, Husqvarna could well finish runner-up. In the Rally2 category, the World Cup title has already been won by Klein. The quad World Cup winner’s title remains to be decided and Giroud would very much like to conclude the season opened with his victory in Jeddah as the winner. Three trophies out of four are still to be won: the Women’s Trophy, the Veterans Trophy where the 66 year old Franco Picco (Fantic) is favourite and finally the Rally3 trophy for modified enduro bikes that made its debut on the Rallye du Maroc. The Rally2 Rookie of the Year award should go to Mason Klein, the third award to this revelation of the year in the motorcycle category.

On four wheels, the FIA will award three World Championship titles: for driver, co-driver and manufacturer. Among the drivers, the three contenders are well known. Among their navigators, the battle is between Mathieu Baumel (Toyota Gazoo Racing) with 144 points and Fabian Lurquin (Bahrain Raid Xtreme) with 122 points. Among the manufacturers, Toyota Gazoo Racing has the advantage with 140 points against 120 points for BRX. Toyota has benefited from the consistency of Al Attiyah and Al Rahji, although the Prodrives of Loeb and Terranova pulled back on the Rallye du Maroc by taking 55 points against 37 points for the Japanese brand. 5 FIA Rally-Raid Championship titles are up for grabs: T3 driver, T3 co-driver, T4 driver, T4 co-driver and T4 manufacturer. The 3 T5 titles of driver, co-driver and constructor were already awarded to the Iveco of Kees Koolen‘s Project 2030 team two weeks ago, as the trucks will not be taking part in the Andalusian round due to the small size of the tracks used.

The program

Tomorrow morning the last administrative and technical checks will be held at the Gran Hipódromo de Andalucía and the final list of starters will be published. The qualifying stage (stage 1A) will take place between 14:00 and 17:00 on October 19th. The caravan of the W2RC will set out on Thursday, October 20 for four loops around Dos Hermanas. In total, 2078 kilometres, of which 1176 kilometres will be special stage are on the menu.

Puntos principales:

Ø ronda del W2RC. 21 pilotos de motos y quads participarán en el campeonato FIM y 20 coches en el de la FIA.

Ø A partir de mañana por la tarde, la carrera empezará con la especial de calificación, seguida de cuatro jornadas que llevarán a los aspirantes hasta los títulos máximos.

Ø En esta primera temporada del W2RC, están en liza 5 títulos de campeón del mundo de rally-raid FIM y FIA, 8 títulos de campeón de rally-raid FIA, tres títulos de campeón de la copa del mundo de rally-raid FIM, así como 4 títulos de campeón del trofeo rally-raid FIM.

En cuanto a los pilotos de moto profesionales Rally GP, la FIM espera a 11 pilotos en las verificaciones habituales. Cuatro estarán ausentes. Matthias Walkner (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), vigente campeón del mundo, ausente en la tercera ronda, sigue convaleciente. Su compañero de equipo Toby Price, víctima de una caída en el Rallye du Maroc, tampoco tomará la salida de la prueba final. Daniel Sanders (GasGas Factory Racing) se encuentra en la misma situación que Walkner tras la caída sufrida en el Dakar. Pablo Quintanilla, actualmente segundo en la general ha tenido que anular su participación en el último momento. El piloto oficial de Monster Energy Honda se lesionó un hombro en el Rallye du Maroc y finalizó la prueba aguantando el dolor. En Rally 2, son 7 los inscritos, incluido Mason Klein (BAS World KTM Racing), el joven estadounidense de 20 años que ganó ya la copa del mundo de rally-raid Rally 2 y el trofeo de junior Rally 2 en la tercera ronda. En quads, serán 3 los pilotos. El líder de la general y ganador del Dakar Alexandre Giroud (Yamaha SMX Drag’on), Jurav Varga (Varga Motorsport Team) 2º de la general y Kamil Wisnieswski (Orlen Team) 5º de la clasificación provisional.

Por parte de la FIA, son 7 los coches inscritos en la prueba final, con tres pilotos matemáticamente en la pugna por el título: Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) con 144 puntos, Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme) con 122 puntos y Al Rajhi (Toyota Overdrive) con 100 puntos. En T3, con 8 prototipos ligeros esperados, la situación es idéntica. López (Can-Am Factory South Racing) con 182 puntos, Gutiérrez (Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team) con 154 puntos y su compañero de equipo Quintero con 144 puntos siguen todavía en la batalla por el título. Y lo mismo sucede en T4, en la categoría más reñida: Marek Goczal (Cobant-Energylandia) con 152 puntos, Baciuska (South Racing Can-Am) con 151 puntos y Jones (Can-Am Factory South Racing) con 150 puntos no podrían estar más pegados.

Los títulos en liza

El próximo domingo, la FIM entregará 2 títulos de campeón del mundo. Primero se hará entrega del título al mejor piloto y Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing) figura como favorito, con 74 puntos frente a los 50 puntos de Brabec (Monster Energy Honda), el que es ahora su rival más cercano puesto que Quintanilla no tomará la salida. A continuación, se presentará el título del mejor fabricante, para el que HRC posee una ventaja clara que le permitirá afrontar con calma la prueba final. El equipo rojo suma 112 puntos frente a los 74 puntos de GasGas y los 70 puntos para KTM. Dos marcas que contarán con tan solo un representante y sobre las que pesa la amenaza de Husqvarna. Con 67 puntos y dos de los pilotos más rápidos del Rallye du Maroc, la marca con la “H” azul podría quitarles el segundo puesto. En Rally 2, el título de ganador de la copa del mundo ya ha sido para Klein. Pero aún queda por decidir al ganador de la copa del mundo de quads. Giroud busca terminar la temporada que iniciaba con la victoria en Jeddah con el título de la copa del mundo. Tres de cuatro trofeos están aún sin dueño: el femenino, el veterano que acaricia Franco Picco, la inagotable leyenda, a sus 66 años (Fantic) y, por último, el de Rally 3 para las motos de enduro adaptadas a la autonomía del rally-raid, que se han estrenado en el Rallye du Maroc y que finalizarán esta semana su temporada. El premio del mejor “rookie” del año en Rally 2 parece reservado a Mason Klein, con lo que la revelación del año en motos terminaría con tres distinciones, incluido el título junior.

En cuatro ruedas, la FIA entregará 3 títulos de campeón del mundo: piloto, copiloto y fabricante. Al de los pilotos, son tres los aspirantes. En la categoría de copilotos se libra un auténtico duelo entre Mathieu Baumel (Toyota Gazoo Racing) con 144 puntos y Fabian Lurquin (Bahrain Raid Xtreme) con 122 puntos. En cuanto al título de los fabricantes, la ventaja es para Toyota Gazoo Racing con 140 puntos frente a los 120 puntos para BRX. Toyota se ha beneficiado de la regularidad de Al-Attiyah y de Al-Rahji, aunque los Prodrive de Loeb y de Terranova invirtieron la tendencia en el Rallye du Maroc, al adjudicarse 55 puntos, frente a los 33 puntos de la marca japonesa. Se otorgarán 5 títulos de campeón de rally-raid de la FIA: piloto T3, copiloto T3, piloto T4, copiloto T4 y fabricante T4. Los 3 títulos de T5, piloto, copiloto y fabricante, ya han sido para el Iveco del equipo Project 2030 de Kees Koolen, hace dos semanas, puesto que los camiones no participan en la ronda andaluza por el tamaño de las pistas.

El programa

Mañana por la mañana se celebran las últimas verificaciones administrativas y técnicas en el Gran Hipódromo de Andalucía y se conocerá la lista definitiva de competidores. La especial de calificación (etapa 1A) se disputará entre las 14:00-17:00 el 19 de octubre. La caravana del W2RC saldrá el jueves 20 de octubre para realizar un recorrido en bucle alrededor de Dos Hermanas. En total, a los competidores del W2RC les esperan 2.078 kilómetros de los cuáles 1.176 de tramos cronometrados hasta el domingo 23 de octubre.
