With the RallyGP, Rally3, T1, T3 and T4 championships still up for grabs, all the W2RC thoroughbreds

have come together at the Gran Hipodromo de Andalucía in Dos Hermanas, in the Province of Seville, for the 3rd edition of the Andalucía Rally. The fourth and last round of the World Rally Raid Championships, that kicks off tomorrow with a 9.67 km qualifying stage, has in turn have attracted a number of ‘outsiders’ keen to test their level of competitiveness, or in the case of Peterhansel and Serradori, that of their vehicles. Amateurs or professionals, they will have the pleasure of racing across four of Andalucia’s stunningly beautiful provinces, watched over by the Guardia Civil, the police and no less than 1200 volunteer marshals, not to mention legions of motorsport fans, finally able to witness a rally-raid up close, after two years of sanitary restrictions.

Con los campeonatos de RallyGP, Rally3, T1, T3 y T4 aún en juego, todas las estrellas del W2RC, los purasangre del Campeonato del Mundo, se reúnen en el Gran Hipódromo de Andalucía en Dos Hermanas, en la provincia de Sevilla, para la tercera edición del Andalucía Rally. La cuarta y última prueba del Campeonato del Mundo de Rally Raid, que comienza mañana con una etapa clasificatoria de 9,67 km, ha atraído a su vez a varios “outsiders” deseosos de poner a prueba su nivel de competitividad, o en el caso de Peterhansel y Serradori, el de sus vehículos. Amateurs o profesionales disfrutarán de un completo recorrido que transcurre por cuatro provincias andaluzas de gran belleza, en un entorno de seguridad garantizado por la Guardia Civil, la Policía y no menos de 1.200 comisarios voluntarios. Por no hablar de las legiones de aficionados al automovilismo que, por fin, podrán presenciar un rally raid desde cerca tras dos años de restricciones sanitarias.

On the bikes Pablo Quintanilla’s (Monster Energy Honda) last minute withdrawal has taken a load of pressure off Sam Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing) with Quinty’s teammate Ricky Brabec now his closest, just mathematically possible, rival. With both Sam and Ricky preferring a bit more open space to express their talents, neither however are hot favourites here for race victory. Many are tipping 2020 winner Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) for that honour, or why not ‘local’ man Lorenzo Santolino (Sherco Factory) who has finished on the podium on the two previous editions. In Rally2, behind Klein, everything is still up for grabs in W2RC, with Bradley Cox (BAS World KTM Racing), looking to make up for his Abu Dhabi DNF by challenging for podium places. In Rally3 the Moroccan rider Amine Echiguer leads the class, following his impressive performance on home turf and has crossed the Straits of Gibraltar with the firm intention of wrapping up the World Cup. An ambition also shared by 2022 Dakar quad winner Alexandre Giroud (Yamaha Racing SMX Drag’on).

In the cars the ‘invincible’ Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) will have to put his foot down if he wants to make it a hat-trick on the Andalucía Rally (after his 2020 and 2021 wins), this time against none other than Sebastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme). The Frenchman will not only be a threat because of the type of special stages expected in Andalusia, faster and narrower, WRC-style, but also because the nine-time world rally champion needs to triumph if he wants to win his tenth World Championship. Will his 22-point lead encourage the Dakar champion to cruise around against his super-competitive nature? Tomorrow we will start to get an idea – the prize of being the first W2RC champion is very tempting… Victory on Spanish soil could also go to the surprising Guerlain Chicherit (GCK Motorsports), who demonstrated with his win on the Rallye du Maroc an incredible ability to adapt to the BRX Hunter. Or why not to the Saudi Yazeed Al-Rajhi (Toyota Overdrive), the other trump card of the Japanese brand. The local hero this time will be Isidre Esteve (Repsol Rally Team), who has just achieved his best result on a World Championship round (seventh in Morocco)… a score he can maybe improve upon at his home race. In T3 Francisco ‘Chaleco’ Lopez (Can-Am Factory South Racing) was beaten for the first time on the W2RC 2022 in Morocco by young Seth Quintero (Red Bull Off Road Junior Team)… but he still finished second, consolidating his championship lead over Cristina Gutierrez (Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team). Only victory (which she already achieved in 2021) can produce another championship title for the Spaniard…There are no tactical choices to be made in T4 either. With the three title contenders separated by only two points, Marek Goczal (Cobant-Energylandia Rally Team), Rokas Baciuska (South Racing Can-Am) and Austin Jones (Can-Am Factory South Racing) will be going flat out. Will the Spaniards Gerard Farrés (Can-Am Factory South Racing) or Pau Navarro (FN Speed) dare to get involved in the fight?

When you think of Stéphane Peterhansel or Mathieu Serradori you immediately think of two frontrunners in the car category. Peterhansel is the living legend of rally-raid while Serradori holds the rare distinction of winning a Dakar stage in a privateer team. But this time, both are coming to the Andalucía Rally with very different vehicles and objectives to those they will have on the next Dakar. It is not the first time that Peterhansel has been at the wheel of a vehicle less sophisticated than, for example, the ultra hi-tech Audi RS Q e-tron E2 he raced at the Rallye du Maroc. The Frenchman has already competed in a lightweight prototype in the past and here in Andalusia, the 14-time Dakar winner will drive a X-Raid Yamaha YXZ1000R 2023 which he will help to fine-tune ready for next January, hence his entry in the SSV Open category. The fourteen-time Dakar winner, who will be accompanied by his regular co-driver Edouard Boulanger, will undoubtedly be able to provide the German team with top-level feedback. Mathieu Serradori, accompanied by Loïc Minaudier, will also be a luxury reinforcement for PH Sport in the development of their Zephyr. The French duo will be competing against the stars of the T3 category and it will be interesting to see what they can achieve outside their comfort zone. Who knows if, thanks to the advice of the experienced French drivers, these two machines will be competitive alternatives on the next Dakar.

STAT OF THE DAY: 3

The 3^rd edition of the Andalucía Rally has the honour of being the last round of the first FIA-FIM W2RC World Rally-Raid Championship. And while all but two of the categories are yet to be decided, by the far the closest fought battle is in the T4 category. This class, for production based SSVs, has seen an explosion of interest in recent years, so it is perhaps no surprise that the racing is tight. But few would have guessed that after thousands of kilometres of desert the leading 3 would be separated by just 3 consecutive points! Representing 3 different nationalities, the overall leader since the Rallye du Maroc is the Polish driver Marek Goczal (Cobant-Energylandia) with 152 points, just 1 point ahead of the Lithuanian Rokas Baciuska (South Racing Can-Am) with 151 points, who in turn is just 1 point in front of the American Austin Jones (Can-Am Factory South Racing) with 150 points. With the Andalucia Rally featuring relative narrow tracks, the race, on paper at least, should suit Goczal and Baciuska, with their Baja and Rallycross backgrounds, better than Jones, more at home in the wide-open spaces of the California desert. But that’s just on paper. All are blisteringly fast and fiercely competitive and the only prediction anybody is willing to make is that they will all being going flat out right from the start…

W2RC

‘Nothing is decided until the final finish line’. It might be a motorsport cliché but it will nevertheless be very present in the minds of Nasser Al Attiyah (Overdrive Toyota), Francisco ‘Chaleco’ Lopez (Can-Am Factory South Racing) and Sam Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing), the three leaders of the W2RC in FIA Cars, T3 and RallyGP. The Qatari is 22 points ahead of Loeb; the Chilean is 28 points ahead of Cristina Gutiérrez (Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team) and the GasGas mounted Brit is 24 points ahead of Ricky Brabec (his Monster Energy Honda teammate, Pablo Quintanilla, is second overall at 22 points, but is out of the Andalucía Rally due to a shoulder injury). In all cases the points difference suggests a favourite… but that can sometimes lead to counterproductive strategies. Where there will be absolutely no calculations will be in T4, with three drivers (Marek Goczal, Rokas Baciuska and Austin Jones) separated by just two points. It will be the most intense fight of the Andalucía Rally!

Sam Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing): “I’m looking forward to the Andalucia Rally, quite a different race to the others on the calendar ‘cos here we have slippery Spanish trails. I had a few issues going into the Rallye du Maroc, I hurt my hand which bothered me a bit during the race. Now that’s all cleared up and I felt really good testing here this week. The goal here in Andalucia is quite clear – to have a smooth race and try and get the few points I need to win the world title – we’ll see how we go.”

Chaleco López (Can-Am Factory South Racing): “It’s the first time I’m in Spain fighting for the end of a championship and I want to enjoy it from start to finish. Andalusia is a different environment, there are no off-road sections, here you have to follow the track, WRC style. We have to do well because the competition is going to be very tough. We’re going to go on the attack, but with our heads paying attention to the championship.”

En motos, el abandono de última hora de Pablo Quintanilla (Monster Energy Honda) ha quitado mucha presión a Sam Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing) que ahora tendrá en otro piloto de HRC, Ricky Brabec, a su rival más cercano y todavía con opciones matemáticas al título. Tanto Sam como Ricky prefieren un espacio más abierto para expresar su talento, pero ninguno de los dos es el gran favorito para la victoria en la carrera. Muchos apuestan por el ganador de 2020, Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), o, por qué no, por el local Lorenzo Santolino (Sherco Factory), que ha subido al podio en las dos ediciones anteriores. En Rally2, detrás de Klein, todo está aún en juego en W2RC, con Bradley Cox (BAS World KTM Racing), buscando compensar su abandono de Abu Dhabi luchando por los puestos del podio. En el Rally3, el piloto marroquí Amine Echiguer lidera la categoría tras su impresionante actuación en casa y ha cruzado el Estrecho de Gibraltar con la firme intención de hacerse con la Copa del Mundo. En coches, el ‘invencible’ Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) tendrá que correr, y mucho, si quiere sumar un hat-trick de victorias en el Andalucía Rally (tras las de 2020 y 2021), esta vez ante Sebastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme). El francés no solo será una amenaza por el tipo de especiales que se esperan en Andalucía, más estrechas y resbaladizas, estilo WRC, sino también porque al nueve veces campeón del mundo de rallies solo le vale ganar si quiere lograr su décimo Mundial. ¿Los 22 puntos de ventaja provocarán que el campeón del Dakar corra, esta vez, en contra de su naturaleza súper competitiva? Mañana empezaremos a salir de dudas, pero el premio de ser el primer campeón W2RC es muy tentador…

De cara a la victoria en tierras españolas conviene no olvidar al sorprendente Guerlain Chicherit (GCK Motorsports), que demostró en el Rallye du Maroc una increíble capacidad de adaptación al BRX Hunter anotándose el triunfo en el rally africano. Tampoco al saudí Yazeed Al-Rajhi (Toyota Overdrive), la otra baza de la marca japonesa. El ídolo local será en esta ocasión Isidre Esteve (Repsol Rally Team), que viene de lograr su mejor clasificación en una prueba del Mundial (séptimo en Marruecos)… y quizá pueda mejorarla en su carrera de casa.
En T3 Francisco ‘Chaleco’ López (Can-Am Factory South Racing) fue derrotado por primera vez en el W2RC 2022 en Marruecos por el joven Seth Quintero (Red Bull Off Road Junior Team)… pero aún así terminó segundo, afianzando su posición en cabeza del campeonato respecto a Cristina Gutiérrez (Red Bull Off Road Junior Team). Al chileno le puede servir la estrategia de ‘nadar y guardar la ropa’, pero la española tendrá que dar su máximo porque solo le vale la victoria (que ya logró en 2021).

No habrá estrategias posibles entre los T4. Con los tres contendientes al título separados por solo dos puntos, a Marek Goczal (Cobant-Energylandia Rally Team), Rokas Baciuska (South Racing Can-Am) y Austin Jones (Can-Am Factory South Racing) . ¿Osarán los españoles Gerard Farrés (Can-Am Factory South Racing) o Pau Navarro (FN Speed) inmiscuirse en esa pelea?

Cuando se escuchan los nombres de Stephane Peterhansel o de Mathieu Serradori inmediatamente pensaríamos en que son dos de los grandes candidatos a la victoria en la categoría de coches. Peterhansel es la leyenda viva del rally-raid y Serradori luce en su palmarés incluso un triunfo de etapa en Arabia Saudí, pese a no haber pilotado para un equipo oficial. Pero esta vez, ambos acuden al Andalucía Rally con vehículos y objetivos muy diferentes a los que tendrán en el próximo Dakar.

No será la primera vez que Peterhansel se ponga al volante de un vehículo menos sofisticado que el ultra-tecnológico Audi RS Q e-tron E2 con el que corrió en Marruecos. El galo ya ha disputado alguna que otra prueba en un prototipo ligero en el pasado y aquí, en Andalucía, el 14 veces ganador del Dakar pilotará un Yamaha YXZ1000R 2023 del equipo X-Raid que ayudará a poner a punto de cara al mes de enero, de ahí que se inscriba en la categoría SSV Open. Sin duda, el catorce veces ganador del Dakar, que estará acompañado por su copiloto habitual, Edouard Boulanger, podrá dar indicaciones de primer nivel al equipo alemán.

Mathieu Serradori, acompañado por Loïc Minaudier, también será un refuerzo de lujo para PH Sport en el desarrollo, en este caso, de su Zephyr. El dúo francés se medirá a las estrellas de la categoria T3 y será interesante ver qué puede lograr fuera de su ‘zona de confort’. Quién sabe si gracias a los consejos de los experimentados pilotos galos estas dos máquinas podrán ser una alternativa competitiva en el próximo Dakar.

LA CIFRA DEL DÍA: 3

La 3ª edición del Andalucía Rally tiene el honor de ser la última prueba del primer Campeonato del Mundo de Rallys-Raid FIA-FIM W2RC. Y aunque todas las categorías, excepto una, están aún por decidir, la batalla más reñida es, con diferencia, la de la categoría T4. Esta clase, destinada a los SSV de producción, ha experimentado una explosión de interés en los últimos años, por lo que no es de extrañar que la competición sea muy reñida. Pero pocos habrían imaginado que, tras miles de kilómetros de desierto, los tres primeros clasificados presentan tres puntuaciones consecutivas. Representando a tres nacionalidades diferentes, el líder de la general desde el Rallye du Maroc es el piloto polaco Marek Goczal (Cobant-Energylandia) con 152 puntos, solo un punto por delante del lituano Rokas Baciuska (South Racing Can-Am) con 151 puntos, que a su vez está apenas un punto por delante del estadounidense Austin Jones (Can-Am Factory South Racing), con 150. Dado que el Andalucía Rally presenta pistas relativamente estrechas, la carrera, al menos sobre el papel, debería convenir a Goczal y Baciuska, más adaptados a terrenos tipo Baja o Rallycross que Jones, que se siente más cómodo en los espacios abiertos del desierto de California. Pero eso es sólo sobre el papel. Todos son muy rápidos y muy competitivos y la única predicción que se puede hacer es que los tres irán a tope desde el principio…

W2RC

Hasta que se cruza la última línea de meta no hay nada decidido. Esta máxima del automovilismo estará muy presente en las cabezas de Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing), Francisco ‘Chaleco’ López (Can-Am Factory South Racing) o Sam Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing), los tres líderes del W2RC en T1, T3 y Rally GP. El catarí tiene 22 puntos de ventaja sobre Sebastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme); el chileno goza de 28 sobre Cristina Gutiérrez (Red Bull Off Road Junior Team) y el británico de GasGas aventaja en 24 a Ricky Brabec (su compañero en el Monster Energy Honda, Pablo Quintanilla, es segundo en la general a 22 puntos, pero es baja en el Andalucía Rally por una lesión en el hombro). En todos los casos son ventajas que les permitirían jugar con la calculadora… pero eso en ocasiones puede ser contraproducente. Donde no habrá tregua, seguro, es en T4, con tres pilotos (Marek Goczal, Rokas Baciuska y Austin Jones) separados por apenas dos puntos. ¡Será la lucha más intensa del Andalucía Rally!

Sam Sunderland (GasGas Factory Racing): “Estoy deseando empezar el Andalucía Rally, una carrera diferente al resto de las del calendario porque las pistas españolas por las que transcurre son más deslizantes. Tuve algunos problemas en el Rallye du Maroc, me lastimé la mano y me molestó un poco durante la carrera. Ahora estoy mejor y me he sentido bien esta semana en los test. El objetivo en Andalucía está claro, completar una carrera sin problemas y tratar de conseguir los puntos que necesito para conseguir el título mundial“.

Chaleco López (Can-Am Factory South Racing): “Es la primera vez que estoy en España definiendo un campeonato y quiero disfrutarlo de principio a fin. Andalucía es un entorno diferente, no hay fuera pistas, aquí hay que seguir el camino, al estilo del WRC. Tenemos que hacerlo bien porque la competencia va a ser muy fuerte. Vamos a ir a atacar, pero con la cabeza en el campeonato“.
