Kaunas2022 welcomes NEW high profile cultural events and unveils NEW webinar series for international media.
September has already seen the city of Kaunas welcome two of the biggest events in the European Capital of Culture calendar – the annual Fluxus festival and the major NEW retrospective exhibition from artist and cultural icon Yoko Ono, ‘The Learning Garden of Freedom’.

Yoko Ono launches major exhibition ‘The Learning Garden of Freedom’ ————————————————————
Yoko Ono’s long-awaited retrospective exhibition – The Learning Garden of Freedom – launched in Kaunas on the 10th of September.
The result of a collaboration between the artist’s Studio One in New York and the Kaunas Picture Gallery, the new exhibition from the world-famous artist and performer features conceptual artworks, installations, objects, experimental films, performances, sound and text works. Kaunas celebrates FLUXUS festival 2022 ————————————————————
Six decades since the first European festivals sprang up celebrating the unique ‘anti-art’ movement of Fluxus, Kaunas has hosted the Fluxus festival 2022.
The city witnessed over 30 performances, 7 light installations and almost 400 acts by community members honouring Kaunas-born Fluxus founder George Mačiūnas. The festival culminated at Parodos hill, near George Mačiūnas square, with festival goers climbing to the top in the most dramatic and unexpected ways possible. Kaunas2022 launches NEW media webinar series ————————————————————
The Kaunas2022 team have announced a series of webinars dedicated to sharing the biggest news and events from the city with global media.
The first of these webinars will take place on Wednesday the 5th of October and is titled ‘Learning from the Litvaks: Understanding the Capital of Culture’s Role in EU Democracy’. Key speakers will include Kaunas2022 CEO Dr Virginija Vitkienė, Curator of the Memory Office Programme Dr. Daiva Price and artist Jenny Kagan. Explore Lithuanian identity with the World Litvak Culture Forum ————————————————————
The World Litvak Culture Forum (kaunas2022.eu/en/litvakforum/ ) is undoubtedly one of the most important events on the Kaunas 2022 programme. Litvaks from across the world will be returning to Kaunas on September 29th and 30th to discuss what it means to be Lithuanian, as well as exploring how art, culture and its history have shaped the place it is today – and importantly, what the future will hold.
Modernist Architecture-inspired film to premiere in Kaunas with the conference: “Modernism for the Future. Interpretations” ————————————————————
Initiated in 2019 after awaiting its UNESCO recognition, Kaunas 2022 team decided to create a movie about its modernist architecture. Together with the European Capital of Culture 2022 programme Modernism for the future and Aideen Barry, ‘Folds/Pleats (kultura.kaunas.lt/en/events/view/klostes-filmo-apie-kauno-modernizma-premjera/5718) ’ was created. The movie with its unusual plot where residents of Kaunas become characters in the film, is finally premiering on 21st of September following a conference on “Modernism for the Future. Interpretations”. Press trip opportunities:
1. Experience Yoko Ono’s NEW major retrospective Here’s your opportunity to enter the mind of one of the most iconic artists working today, Yoko Ono. As Yoko’s exhibition ‘Learning Garden of Freedom’ launches in Kaunas, you’ll have an exclusive look at a range of her latest works including conceptual art and experimental cinema.
2. Discover the history of Kaunas through CityTelling Festival Unique to Kaunas2022, CityTelling festival shines a light on the forgotten stories of the city, especially those from the Litvak community. Learn more about the known and unknown history of Kaunas through a mix of exhibitions, performances and forums.
3. Experience “Out of Darkness” by Jenny Kagan Initially created for British audiences, Jenny Kagan’s “Out of Darkness” brings the story of her parents’ struggle for survival and escape from Kaunas during WWII to the city where it all began. Discover how her parents married in the ghetto and became two of only 500 Kaunas Jews to survive the war.
4. Press conference and preview of Robert Wilson’s ‘Dorian’ You’re invited to join the press conference and exclusive preview of the first Kaunas-based performance of ‘Dorian’, the latest production from prominent American artist Robert Wilson. Dorian’s storytelling combines motifs from the lives of Oscar Wilde, his character Dorian Grey, and English painter Francis Bacon. 28th September.
